Strawberry Topiary

Strawberry TopiaryFor the last four years I have been part of a wonderful event called Chocolate Delight Night at my church. This year we did something a little different in regard to the decorations. Table hostesses were responsible for providing the decorations and place settings for their table. The results were fabulous. Some people teamed up and others went it alone.

I was on “reserve” but I should have known I would end up having a table, because this is one of our biggest events every year. All that was provided to each table hostess was a table, 6 chairs and a white tablecloth.

I had so many ideas it was hard to settle on just one. I went with brown, gold and red with a strawberry topiary as the centerpiece. I bought 6 cartons of strawberries thinking I would be able to make three topiaries. Boy, was  I mistaken! I used almost all of them on this one topiary. I was pleased with the results and it smelled divine!

My original idea was to dip the strawberries in chocolate first, but I didn’t have the time or skill to pull that off. I covered the topiary form with aluminum foil and used toothpicks to secure the strawberries. I started at the very top, choosing the most uniform strawberries I could find. Jocelyn thought it looked like a flower when I got that first row done. I continued rows until it was covered, then tried to fill in open spots.

If I ever do this again, I will probably make the topiary on location. Transporting it was not fun. You should have seen me cruising down the highway with a saran-wrapped topiary buckled in beside me!
