8 years ago I wrote a post about being a boy mom. It’s crazy how life just flies by. At the time I honestly couldn’t imagine having girls, and yet here I am with TWO of them!
As I read what I wrote so long ago about parenting a boy, several parts made me giggle because ooooh how things have changed. My boy and my girls have brought out the good and the bad in me, in totally different ways, and strengthened things in me that I didn’t know needed to be.
I love having both genders in our house, but to be honest… the estrogen currently dominates in our household. So while I am in the thick of our girl world, here are the 5 things I absolutely adore about having little girls.
So. Many. Fun. Clothes.
I don’t know if it’s just maturity that’s done it to me, or if it was the daughters, but my fashion has greatly improved. I’m not fashionista, but I can no longer say that I don’t know anything about fashion. I have come into my own with what I like to wear and I absolutely love dressing my daughters, doing their hair, and especially matching them to each other and occasionally with me! The big negative to this is that I might – maybe, possibly – spend a little bit too much money on their clothes. Whoops!
Relationship comes easily to them.
This isn’t to say that my boy isn’t good at relationships, but girls have another level. When I’m not doing well, my girls sense it. They want to communicate and relate, to discuss feeling and thoughts. The ability to read others is very cool to experience in such little people, and I love the relationship dynamics between my children because of the vibe the girls bring to the mix.
Family oriented play is always happening.
While I have no problem with the kids having big imaginations, it does bring me great pride to see the three of them playing family and house. They see what my husband and I have and what we do, and they love to imitate it. I’m sure all children do this to an extent, but the girls bring it up a notch. It’s a beautiful thing to watch them grow in tenderness and awareness of others as they pretend to care for their dolls and use teamwork to play family with each other.
Sisters make brothers better people.
And vice versa. It’s pretty obvious that God made males and females to compliment one another and bring out the best in one another. I think that I am a better human because of having brothers, and I see my son becoming a more loving human because of having little sisters. I love how they bring out tenderness and protectiveness in him and teach him how to treat women well.
Daughters become lifelong friends.
My mother cried hardest at my brothers’ weddings. My dad cried hardest at his daughters’ weddings. I think there’s something to this phenomenon. A girl is her mom’s best friend: forever. Getting married doesn’t change that. A boy’s best girl is his mom: until he gets married. As much as I adore my son, the fact is that when he gets married, there will be a new woman that’s #1. But my daughters? Our relationship will hopefully only get deeper and sweeter when I get to be there for them as they enter marriage and motherhood. And that’s what I truly can’t wait for.
What do you love about your daughter?
